Family Therapy: Strengthening Your Bonds
Enhancing your family dynamics to build strong and healthy family connections.

Restoring Connection and Harmony to Your Home
Every family goes through seasons of "ebb and flow," but sometimes the water gets too rough to navigate alone. Whether you are struggling with constant arguments, a major life transition, or a breakdown in communication with your teen, Strong River Counselling provides a structured, supportive environment to help your family find its way back to harmony.
In our Coquitlam clinic, we look at the family as a whole system. We don't believe in "problem people," only "problem patterns." Our goal is to help you identify the cycles that keep your family stuck and replace them with new ways of relating that foster empathy and trust.
How Family Therapy Can Help
Many families in the Tri-Cities reach out to us when they are navigating significant life transitions or persistent challenges. We specialize in:
-
Conflict Resolution: Moving past the "same old arguments" to find real solutions.
-
Supporting Neurodivergence: Helping the whole family adapt to and celebrate an ADHD or Autism diagnosis.
-
Healing Relationship Ruptures: Repairing trust after a trauma, loss, or period of high stress.
-
Blended Family Dynamics: Navigating the unique complexities of merging households.
Our Approach: Emotion-Focused & Systemic Support
We utilize specialized frameworks like Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) and Systemic Therapy to address the root causes of family distress. Our sessions are designed to:
-
Improve Communication: Moving past "blame and defend" to "hear and understand."
-
Navigate Life Transitions: Supporting families through separation, divorce, remarriage, or moving.
-
Heal Attachment Injuries: Repairing trust after a conflict or a period of disconnection.
-
Support Sibling Dynamics: Helping brothers and sisters navigate rivalry and build lifelong bonds.
What to Expect in Family Sessions
Many families feel anxious about coming to therapy together. We prioritize Psychological Safety for every member of the family—from the youngest child to the parents.
Typically, our process involves:
-
Initial Assessment: Understanding the unique history and goals of your family unit.
-
Collaborative Goal Setting: Ensuring every voice is heard in the room.
-
Active Skill Building: Practicing new ways of communicating in real-time within the safety of the session.
Do we all have to attend every session?
While we love having the whole family, we often work with different 'sub-groups' (just parents, or just siblings) depending on your family's needs.
Additionally, individual Child Therapy may be recommended alongside family work to give your child a private space for expressive play.

Family Therapy & Connection FAQs
"Family is a microcosm of the world. To understand the world, we can study the family: issues such as power, intimacy, autonomy, trust, and communication skills are vital parts underlying how we live in the world. To change the world is to change the family." - Virginia Satir
