Parenting Support & Clinical Coaching in Coquitlam

Parenting is the hardest job you will ever have, and yet it comes with the least amount of training. Perhaps you are navigating a new ADHD diagnosis, struggling with constant power struggles, or simply feeling "tapped out" and exhausted. At Strong River Counselling, we believe that parenting support isn't about being a "perfect" parent—it's about having a full toolkit and a regulated nervous system.

We provide a non-judgmental, clinical space in Coquitlam for parents to find their feet, build their skills, and reconnect with the joy of raising their children.

When to Seek Clinical Parenting Support

Many parents wait until they are in a state of "crisis" to seek help. However, coaching is most effective when used as a proactive tool. You might benefit from support if:

  • You Feel "Tapped Out": You find yourself reacting with anger or withdrawal more often than you’d like.

  • The "Old Tools" Don't Work: Traditional discipline like time-outs or charts aren't working for your neurodivergent or sensitive child.

  • Caregiver Burnout: You feel a sense of dread or exhaustion regarding your daily parenting tasks.

  • Co-Parenting Disconnect: You and your partner (or ex-partner) are on completely different pages regarding boundaries and discipline.

  • Navigating Complexity: You need specific strategies for ADHD, Autism, or School Refusal.

Our Approach: Neuro-affirming & Relationship-First

We move away from "behavior modification" and toward co-regulation.

Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

We utilize principles from EFFT to help you become the "primary agent of change" in your child's life. We believe that when a parent feels supported and empowered, the child’s behavior naturally follows. We help you process your own "parental blocks"—those big feelings that get in the way of you being the parent you want to be.

What to Expect in Coaching Sessions

Unlike "talk therapy," our parenting sessions are often highly practical and solution-oriented.

  1. Decoding Behavior: We look at the "why" behind your child's struggles so you can respond with clarity instead of frustration.

  2. Regulation Tools: We teach you "in-the-moment" strategies to keep your own nervous system calm during a meltdown.

  3. Low-Demand Parenting: For families with neurodivergent children, we specialize in "low-demand" frameworks that reduce household friction and increase cooperation.
